Registration Open for CampWCP
During the camp, ten middle school students will learn about the art of playwriting and devise their own monologues on what home means to them. In a safe space, playwright José Casas will guide the young artists and weave their collectively created stories into a piece of devised theater. Students will learn acting techniques and how to physically embody a character from Playhouse Director of Education, Jenny Nelson.
We’ve also invited local community housing activists to share their important work and talk about how students can use their voice to better our community. Campers will also have the opportunity to learn what happens behind the scenes at a working theater through workshops with Playhouse staff.
Students will finish their camp experience by performing an original monologue (developed during camp) at the Playhouse for an invited audience of family and friends. Students will also receive a bound copy of the piece they create together. We hope that CampWCP empowers young artists to activate their creative voice — so that they can ignite social change for their community and beyond.

Mystic Seaport Museum
Mystic Seaport Museum is the nation’s leading maritime museum. Founded in 1929 to gather and preserve the rapidly disappearing artifacts of America’s seafaring past, the Museum has grown to become a national center for research and education with the mission to “inspire an enduring connection to the American maritime experience.”
The Mystic Seaport Museum grounds cover 19 acres on the Mystic River in Mystic, CT and include a recreated New England coastal village, a working shipyard, formal exhibit halls, and state-of-the-art artifact storage facilities. The Museum is home to more than 500 historic watercraft, including four National Historic Landmark vessels, most notably the 1841 whaleship Charles W. Morgan, America’s oldest commercial ship still in existence.
A stroll through the historic village enables visitors to experience firsthand from staff historians, storytellers, musicians, and craftspeople just what life was like to earn one’s living from the sea. In the Henry B. duPont Preservation Shipyard, they can watch shipwrights keeping the skills and techniques of traditional shipbuilding alive as they restore and maintain the Museum’s watercraft collection and other vessels.
Stroll Through a Recreated 19th-Century Seafaring Village
Looking for the latest styles in hoop skirts and haberdashery? Stroll through our recreated seaport village! The buildings you see aren’t replications. They’re trade shops and businesses from the 1800s that were transported to Mystic Seaport Museum from locations around New England. The Seaport Village is made up of many bustling maritime trades. From shipsmiths and coopers to woodcarvers and riggers, discover how America’s maritime past shaped life today.
Kids & Family Activities
Calling our youngest sailors: see, touch, explore, and climb aboard! Swab the deck in the Children’s Museum, learn to tie knots at the Discovery Barn, create your own maritime masterpiece, build a toy boat souvenir, climb aboard our fleet of playscapes, and more. Take part in fun indoor and outdoor children’s activities designed just for you.
Please note that some activities are seasonal and some are presently closed due to COVID-19.
Playscape
Climb aboard some small additions to our fleet–a sailing ship, tug boat, and fishing dragger. Don’t worry, none of these boats float in the water. They’re all playscapes, designed just for kids to explore.
The playscape area is surrounded by mulch for safety and is located just across from the Planetarium. Relax on a bench while watching your children play and enjoy lunch at the picnic table.
The playscape is open year-round.
Summer Camps
Mystic Seaport Museum offers a number of summer camp programs that provide a unique learning adventure where meeting new friends is fun and easy. Our wide selection of Summer Day Camps offers boys and girls ages 4 to 16 a kid’s-eye-view of maritime history as they explore the Museum; Community Sailing classes let children ages 8 and older build and refine sailing skills; 8- to 15-year-olds can spend a week learning to sail by day and sleeping aboard a historic ship by night in the Joseph Conrad Summer Sailing Camp; and ages 15 and older can sail along the coast as part of the crew of the schooner Brilliant. Applications Open for Acting for the Camera with Tenisi Davis
Stage actors are taught to project to the back of the mezzanine. But what does that mean when you are in front of the camera? For TV or film? In a theatrical Zoom production? For your next audition reel? For your application tape for a college performing arts program?
SAG/Equity actor Tenisi Davis is your guide to acting in front of the camera. In our new class, Tenisi will take on ten high school students to teach the foundations needed for becoming a leading actor. You’ll learn acting techniques, how to focus your energy, new methods for your tool kit, and the proper audition set-up accepted by all casting directors.
Designed to get you industry-ready, you’ll finish the class with a professionally produced video of yourself performing a monologue of your choosing, filmed on the historic Playhouse stage. You’ll build confidence and gain control of your narrative. And, we hope, along the way you’ll find your mind, body and spirit come into balance; you’ll be alive and ready to work.
Story Hour with Jenny: Maybe Something Beautiful
Story Hour with Jenny is presented by Westport Country Playhouse. Story Hour sessions are at 10AM and 12PM
Maybe Something Beautiful brings the spirit of working and growing together to life. This hour will be special, as Jenny will also read from the Spanish language version of the book. Este libro también se leerá en español — Quizás algo hermoso: Cómo el arte transformó un barrio.
Looking for a fun way for your kids to make new friends and engage in storytelling? Join us for Story Hour with Jenny — interactive readings of social justice-themed picture books for kids in grades K–3! These books will center around the four pillars of our education department — empathy, collaboration, activism and literacy — and are all written and illustrated by BIPOC artists.
Not only will kids get to engage with Jenny — and each other — but we’ll send you a copy of the book we’ll read together for each ticket purchased, plus a bonus activity booklet and crayons! All readings take place over Zoom and are limited to ten children or families per session. All ticketholders will receive an email with a Zoom link for their session two hours prior to the start of each reading. All books are purchased from People Get Ready, a Black-owned community bookspace in New Haven.
The Playhouse is committed to making our educational programming accessible to all children in our community and beyond. To make this a reality, we have pay-what-you-can tickets starting at just $10! For those who are able, there is the option to add a donation towards the cost of providing a book for another child.

Sunday Fun Day Craft Workshop – Dreamcatchers
Are you and your family experiencing a bit of cabin fever? Throughout the winter, the IAIS Education Department is offering private craft workshops on Sunday afternoons. Sign up for a time slot with your family and friends. Express your creativity while learning about the world around you and connecting with a culture that has thousands of years of history in the area. Originating in Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) culture, a dreamcatcher was traditionally placed by an infant, in order to catch bad dreams and let good dreams through. In this week’s workshop, join IAIS educators for a workshop in which participants will make a dreamcatcher of their very own while learning the history behind this cultural tradition.
Pre-registration is required and space per time slot is limited. Questions? Please call (860) 868-0518 or email events@iaismusuem.org. Cost of participation, including materials: $10 for IAIS Members, $15 for Non-Members.

New Date! Bus Trip to the Greenway Carousel Boston
Join Museum staff for a visit to the Boston’s Rose F. Kennedy Greenway Carousel!
$50 per person
$45 Museum Members & Children
Artist Jeff Briggs designed and sculpted a one-of-kind carousel for Boston. His challenge was to create decorations and rides inspired by the “land, sea and air” of the New England environment. Boston schoolchildren were also asked to make drawings of the animals they would like to see on the carousel. Their drawings served as the inspiration for many of the fourteen unique characters that Jeff brought to life, including a sea turtle, a grasshopper, a barn owl, a codfish and a whale. The finishing touch for each animal was a bright, kid-pleasing paint job by artist Bill Rogers, a longtime collaborator. Jeff is based in Newburyport, Mass., and earned a joint degree from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts (SMFA) in 1971.
