  • Stoneage Rock Gym

Appropriate for teens and adults. Ages 12 and under can climb with the assistance of an adult.   Cost include Passes, Gear Rentals, and beginner and advanced Lessons.  Types of climbing include Boulder Climbing, Top Rope Climbing, and Lead Climbing.    New climbers are strongly encouraged to take the beginner lesson (ages 13 through adult)   Rain, snow, cold, bad winds – they can all make outside climbing miserable. As climbers began to strive for higher difficulty climbs, they realized that they needed to train, that the best training for climbing was climbing, and that conditions outdoors could prevent them from getting that training. The answer was to create artificial climbing walls, indoors. The artificial climbing wall is a surface, usually of wood, sometimes, as at Stone Age, coated with the texture similar to that of real stone. The wall is drilled with numerous holes, sometimes in a grid pattern, and T-nuts are pounded into those holes from the back of the wall. T-nuts allow bolts to be screwed into them, and this is used to attach plastic, wood, and stone holds to the wall. Wall structures are held up with strong wooden beams, much like the roof of a house.

The first floor features family friendly, interactive exhibits exploring Dr. Seuss’s Springfield roots and providing opportunities to experiment with new sounds and vocabulary, play rhyming games, and invent stories–all in line with Geisel’s revolutionary role in changing how we learn to read. The second floor, curated by Geisel’s two step daughters and great nephew, recreates Geisel’s studio and living room (with the furniture and art materials he actually used) and features never before publicly displayed art, family photographs and letters, and the original Geisel Grove sign which used to hang in Forest Park.  You can even find Theophrastus, the toy stuffed dog Ted Geisel’s mother gave to him when he was a boy in Springfield. Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden More than 3 million people have visited the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden at the Springfield Museums since it opened in 2002. The sculpture garden celebrates Theodor Seuss Geisel, aka Dr. Seuss, in the city in which he was born and raised. Following Geisel’s death in 1991, his wife, Audrey, authorized the Museums to create the memorial, and since that time, the sculpture garden has attracted crowds of Dr. Seuss fans to frolic alongside his beloved characters. Sculptor Lark Grey Dimond-Cates, who is also Geisel’s step-daughter, created the endearing bronze sculptures. A gallery devoted to the creation of the Dr. Seuss National Memorial Sculpture Garden is located on the second floor of the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum, which opened fifteen years after the sculpture garden was installed. Springfield Science Museum The Springfield Science Museum, founded in 1859 in City Hall, officially opened in 1899 in a classical revival building, expanded in 1932 with an Art Deco addition, and expanded again in 1970 with the Tolman addition that included a public observatory. In 2004, the Welcome Center was added to the Science Museum to serve as the main entrance to the entire campus. The Science Museum houses permanent collections of Natural Science, Anthropology and Physical Science. The Science Museum’s Seymour Planetarium consists of the historic Korkosz Starball, now the oldest operating star-projector in the United States. George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum This art museum holds the eclectic collections of George Walter Vincent Smith (1832-1923) and his wife, Belle Townsley Smith (1845-1928) in an Italian palazzo-style building established in 1896. The vast holdingsinclude excellent examples of Japanese lacquer, arms and armor, ceramics and bronzes; one of the largest collections of Chinese cloisonné outside of Asia; Chinese jade and ceramics; and a superb collection of 19th-century Middle Eastern carpets. In addition, the collection contains significant American 19th-century paintings (especially landscape and genre), Italian 19th-century watercolors, a fine assembly of Greek and Roman antiquities, a rare plaster cast collection, objects created for 19th-century International Expositions and examples of lace and early textiles. • Connecticut Trolley Museum

The Connecticut Electric Railway Association, Inc. is the owner and operator of the Connecticut Trolley Museum.  Founded in October 1940, it is the nation’s oldest incorporated organization dedicated to the preservation of the trolley era. As a non-profit institution, its educational and historical aim is the establishment of a full scale operating street and interurban railroad system with the appropriate accessory equipment and buildings, to recreate an important phase of New England’s business and social life from 1890 to 1949.   A three-mile round trip streetcar ride with an educational narrative is provided to the museum’s visitors during their visit.  All work at the museum, except for one paid employee in the museum office, is done by volunteers.  There are over 70 pieces or rail equipment owned by the museum, some of them dating as far back as 1869.  This collection is made up of passenger and freight streetcars, elevated railway cars, interurban cars, service cars, locomotives (diesel and electric), passenger and freight railroad cars, and other pieces of miscellaneous railway equipment.   All major buildings and the museum’s center of operations are located on a 17-acre facility adjacent to State Route 140 in East Windsor.  The right of way is a 3.2-mile portion of the Rockville branch of the Hartford & Springfield Street Railway Company.  Void of all track, the property was purchased when the organization was formed in 1940.  Over the years, the volunteers have been able to build not only 1.5 miles of track and the associated overhead wire for power distribution, but all of the yard and storage track, the power substation, the storage barns, and a restoration shop. Our mission is to provide a historically accurate educational experience of the trolley era, through the interpretation, preservation, restoration, and operation of an electric railway.

    ELi Whitney Museum and Workshop

The Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop is an experimental learning workshop for students, teachers, and families. We collect, interpret, and teach experiments that are the roots of design and invention. For children between 5 and 12 years old, we offer walk-in projects on weekends, birthday parties, summer, and vacation programs. There are 1001 things to build before you grow up. From Thanksgiving to New Year’s our American Flyer train layout is available for children to run during our open hours. Children can build a toy train on the weekends as a Walk-in project. The Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop was established in 1979 as a not-for-profit historic and educational organization. The Museum preserves the site on which Whitney constructed the first American factory in 1798. With permanent exhibitions as well as special exhibits that visit our site we have an array of offering for all ages and interests such as : The Marble Wall – Children discover the power of marbles before they understand it. Marbles need no captions. Marbles speak their own language. Marbles know all the laws of nature and they obey them in their simplest possible form. Marbles are the atoms of experience. The Water Lab – An outdoor experiment area which engages, a new generation, in the fundamental engineering experiences of the stream and sandbox. The Lab adapts the traditional activities of messing about for the standards of control and safety of our cautious era. It is a shared resource for the region, and a model for schools and communities across the nation. The Factory Model –  The factory model tells the story of the work Whitney directed here and significant changes that are discernible in that work. Our sources: period artwork, Whitney’s probate inventory, records of parallel armories, and informed guesswork. The model is constructed in 1/3 scale. Imagine that the men are 6 feet tall. We are a Workshop: we build things. We are a Museum: we collect things. We collect essential experiments. We also collect the materials that experiments require. We collect tools and clever ways of building. We collect curious and gifted apprentices who can help experimenters get started.   Walk In Programs From Labor Day to Memorial Day we are open on Saturdays from 10 – 3 and Sundays from 12 – 5. When you visit us on a weekend day, an apprentice will work with your child as they build a project and begin to experiment. Sessions last from 20 minutes to an hour. Projects change from weekend to weekend. A sampling of possible projects is available here. During the summer, (Memorial Day to Labor Day) we are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 – 4. Walk-in projects are available on the weekends just as they are in the Fall and Winter. Our Water Learning Lab is open on the weekends from May through October (as weather permits.) Please understand that in the summer, our available projects are much more limited because we are not producing others for school programs. We always have Pinball and Read more [...]
