• Regional YMCA of Western CT, Greenknoll Branch (Brookfield, CT)

We serve the Greater Danbury area, striving every day to strengthen our community and make an impact in people’s lives through our areas of focus. All kids deserve the opportunity to discover who they are and what they can achieve. We see every interaction with young people as an opportunity for learning and development – all grounded in the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility. We help people and families build and maintain healthy habits for spirit, mind, and body in their everyday lives. By helping kids, adults, families, and seniors from all walks of life improve their health and well-being, we build a stronger community. Giving back and providing support to our neighbors With our doors open to all, we bring together people from all backgrounds and support those who need us most. We know that when we work as one, we can move people and our community forward. That’s why we are committed to providing support to our neighbors and opportunities for kids, adults, and families to learn, grow and thrive. Health & Wellness The Y has many ways to get involved – including youth, adult and active older adult sports and fitness classes, working with a personal trainer, nutrition counselor or wellness coach, and taking part in a weight loss or chronic disease prevention program. Choose what programs help you on your journey towards better health and wellness. Youth Sports and FitnessThe Y offers an array of exciting sports programs. Whether it’s gaining the confidence that comes with learning a new sport, building the positive relationships that lead to good sportsmanship and teamwork, or learning new skills, participating in sports at the Y is about building the whole athlete, inside and out. Selecting a sports program to participate in can be as simple as selecting the one you or your child have enjoyed as a fan. However, sometimes it makes sense to think through your/your child’s fitness goals and what they enjoy doing. Sports offer the opportunity to participate individually or as a team, and challenges participants in different ways through endurance, speed, mental toughness, teamwork, strength, and coordination. Learn a new sport or refine existing skills under the supervision of caring, skilled, and supportive Y coaches and instructors. Choose from classes, fitness, clinics, and specialty programs. Arts & Humanities Over the years, our YMCA Arts and Humanities program has established within the Greater Danbury community. Whether an individual has an interest in visual arts, cooking, or dancing the YMCA offers activities for children, youth, teens, adults , and families to express themselves while building healthier spirits, minds and bodies. Child Care – Children are like sponges – they watch and absorb knowledge, skills and values from everything and everyone around them. At the Y, we believe the values and skills learned early on are vital building blocks for quality of life and future success. That’s why our childcare at the Regional YMCA offers a variety of programs that offer a safe, stable and nurturing environment for children 18 months to Read more [...]

  • USA Martial Arts

KARATE FOR KIDS!!!! Our kids martial arts program was designed to reinforce the life lessons and positive attributes that you work so hard to instill.  In addition to self-defense, we will build on qualities such as focus, confidence, respect and discipline.  All this in a fun, safe and supportive atmosphere.  We have classes for everyone: -Little Ninja’s      ages 3 & 4 -Kid Kicks          ages 5 & 6 -Juniors             ages 7-12 -teens & adults ages 7-70   Classes are offered for all ages and skill levels: Little Ninjas (age 3 – 4) Our smallest people have the mostest fun while they’re learning coordination, how to pay attention, and respect for others.   Kid Kicks (age 5 – 6) This is our most popular class! The goal of this class is to teach basic karate skills in a safe and enjoyable environment. The kids have fun and the parents know they are learning how to focus themselves, becoming safer and getting exercise. We also teach safety and self-defense skills that are age-appropriate and fun. Juniors Class (age 7 – 12) The juniors classes are designed to benefit the students with improved physical fitness, instilling self-confidence and personal protection skills. The structure of the classes helps to provide students of this age with the mastery of self discipline. And – it’s just plain fun and exhilarating!   Teens (age 13 – 17) Teen years are tremulous, but karate training can help smooth the rough spots with strenuous exercise, focus, self discipline, and self confidence that translates to any situation that a teen might find themselves in. Some of our teens are third degree black belts, having been with us since they were 5 years old. Other teens start training in high school, and quickly discover that practicing a martial art raises their self esteem and encourages a camaraderie with other students that surpasses that between common sports teammates. Adults (age 17 – 78) Younger adults find an excellent mix of conditioning, fitness and personal protection skills. Older adults – many of our students are in their 40s, 50s, 60s & 70s – are encouraged to be their personal best within whatever physical limits they have. The benefits of martial arts training as an adult are tremendous – conditioning, fitness, camaraderie, self confidence. Karate is one of the few “exercise programs” that actually engages your mind with your body. Visit our website or give us a call to sign up today!

  • The German School of Connecticut Stamford and West Hartford

T The German School of Connecticut (GSC), celebrating its 40th year!   Founded in 1978, GSC is a Saturday school with a student body of over 350, offering a two-track curriculum for non-native beginners, and native or near-fluent speakers.  Classes are held on two campuses (Stamford and West Hartford), ranging from Pre-School through High School and Adult.  Students learn German as a new, non-native language, others expanding their Muttersprache, while all celebrate German, Austrian and Swiss cultures. Many GSC students realize the advantage of studying one of Europe’s leading languages:  Some plan to split their future studies between universities in the US and a German-speaking country, others study to gain a professional advantage.  Certain high school students have the opportunity to take a special German language exam, which can fulfill the language requirement for direct entry at a German university.  GSC introduced these “Sprachdiplom” examinations in the US in 1982, authorized by the German education authorities in Bonn.  Students may also get credits from local high schools, and can prepare to take the AP German Exam to gain US college credit. Studying German at GSC is fun!  Adults enjoy the camaraderie and friendship among like-motivated class participants.  Toddlers and elementary school children enjoy hands-on modern teaching, along with singing, playing and being with their friends.  Middle school and high school students enjoy special projects and cultural events… and all students participate in the many traditional holiday celebrations. German-language materials are available at GSC’s library for students of all ages. GSC also embodies an international parent community:  those from German speaking countries are joined by US and other international parents.  All appreciate the services of the school, and the transnational atmosphere. Classes are held from September to May.  For further information regarding enrollment or teaching, please visit www.GermanSchoolCT.org, or call Stamford at 203.548.0438, West Hartford at 860.404.8838.

Since our Chinese and Japanese lessons are taught in virtual classrooms, young learners can conveniently learn at home even in the evening. Very young learners can be accompanied by adults to assist them in their first term of learning. Our lessons are available daily in the afternoon and evening to make choosing your preferred day and time easy. For best results, we recommend studying Chinese or Japanese steadily following term periods to provide students with year round exposure to the target language, once a week or twice weekly if possible. The complete program spans from three to four years each for the elementary and middle/high school program. By the end of their study, students are expected to achieve conversational and cultural fluency in the target language suited to their age group. ELi Whitney Museum and Workshop

The Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop is an experimental learning workshop for students, teachers, and families. We collect, interpret, and teach experiments that are the roots of design and invention. For children between 5 and 12 years old, we offer walk-in projects on weekends, birthday parties, summer, and vacation programs. There are 1001 things to build before you grow up. From Thanksgiving to New Year’s our American Flyer train layout is available for children to run during our open hours. Children can build a toy train on the weekends as a Walk-in project. The Eli Whitney Museum and Workshop was established in 1979 as a not-for-profit historic and educational organization. The Museum preserves the site on which Whitney constructed the first American factory in 1798. With permanent exhibitions as well as special exhibits that visit our site we have an array of offering for all ages and interests such as : The Marble Wall – Children discover the power of marbles before they understand it. Marbles need no captions. Marbles speak their own language. Marbles know all the laws of nature and they obey them in their simplest possible form. Marbles are the atoms of experience. The Water Lab – An outdoor experiment area which engages, a new generation, in the fundamental engineering experiences of the stream and sandbox. The Lab adapts the traditional activities of messing about for the standards of control and safety of our cautious era. It is a shared resource for the region, and a model for schools and communities across the nation. The Factory Model –  The factory model tells the story of the work Whitney directed here and significant changes that are discernible in that work. Our sources: period artwork, Whitney’s probate inventory, records of parallel armories, and informed guesswork. The model is constructed in 1/3 scale. Imagine that the men are 6 feet tall. We are a Workshop: we build things. We are a Museum: we collect things. We collect essential experiments. We also collect the materials that experiments require. We collect tools and clever ways of building. We collect curious and gifted apprentices who can help experimenters get started.   Walk In Programs From Labor Day to Memorial Day we are open on Saturdays from 10 – 3 and Sundays from 12 – 5. When you visit us on a weekend day, an apprentice will work with your child as they build a project and begin to experiment. Sessions last from 20 minutes to an hour. Projects change from weekend to weekend. A sampling of possible projects is available here. During the summer, (Memorial Day to Labor Day) we are open on Saturdays and Sundays from 11 – 4. Walk-in projects are available on the weekends just as they are in the Fall and Winter. Our Water Learning Lab is open on the weekends from May through October (as weather permits.)
